Matthew A. Thomas.

I am a graduate from Carnegie Mellon University, where I earned a Master's degree in Computer Engineering (Dec 2020). I currently work as a Software Engineer at Tesla. In particular, I have worked in Battery Assembly and created end-to-end data pipelines from the manufacturing equipment/hardware to dashboards to provide visibility on the line to upper-management. I have programmed the manufacturing equipment in order to make many optimizations. And, I have created Human-Machine interfaces to assist technicians in controlling manufacturing equipment.

Education and Work History

Resume

I have a very diverse background ranging from the Physical Sciences to Computer Science. The characteristics I posses that have allowed me to succeed across different scientific disciplines include a rock solid foundation in Math, ability to learn quickly, and the communication skills to interface with various stakeholders. During my tenure at Kitty Hawk I was the youngest employee to be promoted to Senior Engineer. My engineering decisions were valued as much as those with more experience than me because they were data-driven. This has instilled in me a passion to build data-intensive software that handles, analyzes, and visualizes large/disparate data sets; and, subsequently and most importantly, takes action.

Here is some of the work I am most proud of and permitted to share.

Reddit Track in Real-Time

Deployed dashboard to track most mentioned stocks on reddit and predicted recent surge (2/24) in GameStop price 3 hours early.

Material Informatics Data Pipeline

Data pipeline using pandas to consolidate materials data from disparate sources (directory of text files and PostgreSQL database) into a single master csv file. After onboarding of historical data into master csv, the pipeline can ingest new test files without reloading historical data.

Easy Object Detection

Developed interface with TensorFlow Hub Object Detection API allowing researchers to benchmark state-of-the-art object detection models on personal hardware with one line of code.

AI Image Captioning Tutorial

Made significant extensions to the best TensorFlow image captioning tutorial online, including Bleu Score calculation and Beam Search decoding.

NCAMP Dashboard

Created online dashboard for selecting FAA qualified composite materials. Integrated KNN to recommend materials and collaborative filtering to predict missing material properties.

Vinyl Wrap Study

Established Maximum Operating Temperature and branding colors of Cora by modeling its temperature response to environmental conditions and surface color.

Hepta Energy

Led "Hepta Energy" team to provide detailed design of combined cycle power plant in Pennsylvania. Created accounting spreadsheet that automatically calculated economic KPIs, given output from Pro/II simulations, allowing us to consider more design choices than any other team. We received the Ronald G. Minet Award for Best Senior Design Project in Chemical Engineering Department.
